What is CAS?
CAS stands for:

  • Creativity
  • Action
  • Service

A successful completion of CAS is one of the requirements for obtaining the IB diploma or the school certificate.

Creativity

This can cover a wide range of arts and other activities outside the normal curriculum.

Examples of such activities can be doing dance, theatre, music and art. It may also include creative thinking in the design and carrying out of projects.

Action

In CAS, action relates specifically to physical activity. It can include participation in individual and team sports, and physical activities outside of the normal curriculum. It may also include physical activity involved in carrying out creative and service projects.

Service

Service involves interaction, such as the building of links with individuals or groups in the community. The community can be the school, the local district, or it may be at the national or international level.

Service activities do not only involve doing things for others, but also doing things with others and developing a real commitment with them. The relationship should show respect for the dignity and self-respect of others. There should be prior communication and full consultation with the community or individual concerned. The service provided should be appropriate and you should be able to understand the consequences of what you are doing.

A service activity must provide you with the opportunity to learn. It must be voluntary and unpaid.

Every CAS activity should represent a personal challenge. There should be a definite goal and outcome to the activity. Activities should be planned and evaluated.

CAS involves:

  • Real, purposeful activities, with significant outcomes
  • Personal challenges – the tasks must extend you and be achievable in scope
  • Thoughtful consideration, such as planning, reviewing your progress and reporting
  • Reflection on outcomes and personal learning

An activity must meet all four of these criteria to be considered to be a CAS activity

This is not from the recent pasar murah at school, but the previous and our first one as a year level at Kuningan,West Java. This was one crazy one and this is the scene when the market was open in the first minute. Crazy is one word to describe it.

On the 23rd of May, the Year 11 Students organized the Pasar Murah event intended for local residents that live nearby the school. The CAS hours were categorized into service and students prepared from as early as 6am on a Saturday for the event. Daily goods such as instant noodles and soap were also given out to the locals. Items Ranged from Free to New Items priced at Rp.15,000. Some of the items were comic books, clothing, shoes to jeans. Although not as intense compared to the Kuningan version of the Pasar Murah, the items were sold out quickly as well and the locals were enthusiastic about it. During the busy months of February and March, the Year 11 students, (mostly IB ones) went to Krispy Kremes in Senayan City and Plaza Senayan to sell community cards for CAS. Each community card cost Rp 50,000 ($4.50) and included 10 coupons. Each coupon entitled the buyer to a half dozen of donuts free if they bought a half dozen. The CAS was worth 3 hours and most groups accumulated above Rp.500,000. 100% of the profit from the event, which is sponsored by Habitat for Humanities will be donated for the building of simple homes for the poor in the Greater Jakarta Area

Perhaps the most influential CAS so far, Some year 11′s headed to multiple points in Jakarta to donate food to the people who are in need during the fasting month of Ramadhan

Some Year 11′s headed north to Muara Angke to help children in the orphanage and teach them some valuable stuff

On the Year 11 Environmental Science Trip, the class took the time off snorkeling and tanning to clean up the private beach in the privately owned Semak Daun (Smack Down in pop culture) Island in the Thousands Islands Region.
